Thanks for Coming
5533’ü bir inisiyatif olarak 2007’de başlatan ve o günden bu yana farklı alanlardan kişilere ve izleyicilere mekânın kapısını açık tutan sanatçılar Nancy Atakan ve Volkan Aslan, 2011’de birlikte ürettikleri Thanks For Coming adlı yapıtı, referans aldığı yere geri dönerek ilk kez İstanbul’da sergiliyor. Sergi, İstanbul Manifaturacılar Çarşısı’nın (İMÇ) 22 Nisan 1967’deki açılışında 3. Blok’u dolduran kalabalığı gösteren bir fotoğraftan esinlenen bu yapıtı merkeze alıyor. Yaklaşık 18 yıl boyunca inisiyatifi şekillendiren ve her kullanımda malzemeleri değişen deponun raflarından çıkarılan nesneler, Thanks For Coming’in kaidesini oluşturuyor. Sanatçılar, bu kez sizleri yapıtın çevresinde bir araya gelmeye, geçmişe ve çarşının güncel dinamiklerine birlikte bakmaya, inisiyatifin uzun yolculuğunda soluklanmaya davet ediyor.

Thanks for Coming
Artists Nancy Atakan and Volkan Aslan, who founded 5533 in 2007 as a platform for dialogue across disciplines, present their collaborative work Thanks For Coming (2011) in Istanbul for the first time. Returning the photograph to the place it references, the exhibition reflects on the layered history of both the initiative and its surroundings. The work takes as its starting point a historic photograph of the crowd gathered for the opening of the Istanbul Textile Traders’ Market (İMÇ) in Block 3 on April 22, 1967. The pedistal of the photograph has been constructed from objects retrieved from 5533’s evolving storage, materials that have shaped the initiative for nearly 18 years. The installation serves as a point of reflection as the exhibition invites audiences to gather, to revisit the past, to contemplate the present dynamics of the market, and to pause within the ongoing journey of the initiative.
